What is Social Media?

There are many various definitions of social media, according to Wikipedia it could be:

“Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. …” or

“… The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. …”

…. and so on.  However, these are all very dry and somewhat long-winded. None of these portray what we really think is the real definition and purpose of social media,  here at Make It Rain we believe the legendary business guru Peter Drucker captures the purpose of social media perfectly:

“The purpose of a business is to create a customer” - Peter Drucker

You can also take this one step further “The purpose of a business is to create a customer…. who creates customers” and this, in essence, is the real key to social media success;  to create real brand advocates.

Types of Social Media

Social Media can encompass many things, a blog post, a video, a tweet, a loyal community, a product review…… so where should you start?

Many people naturally assume social media starts and stops with Facebook, twitter and Myspace. In reality there are thousands of different channels you can use for social media campaigns. The chart below illustrates perfectly the diversity of media available:
